The design of any object goes through a very similar process. How you handle that process can significantly affect the result of the designed object. At figforty, we acknowledge that every project and every client requires a specifically tailored process, based in part on complexity, schedule, budget and culture.
However, there are 3 generally accepted ‘Phases’ any given project goes through:
Explore: any project begins with research and idea generation. It is in the Explore phase where the deep possibilities lie, and where the seeds are. Throughout this phase, ideas begin to form and the number of possibilities grows.
Design: the Design phase begins to infuse the ideas with the research, while at the same time looking ahead to the manufacture of the object. Through the Design phase, the ideas are sifted and evaluated, and begin to take physical form.
Realize: the Realize phase applies the rigour of engineering and manufacturing to the selected concept, optimizing it for production.
It is the specific tasks and weighting within these phases that creates the unique character of each project.
Upon introduction to the project, our first obligation to our clients, is to establish the framework for this process.
Process values:
Getting “physical” is essential. We cannot stress enough how this helps create better products faster, with fewer production problems. Prototype as early as possible, as often as possible and in any resolution, from paper and cardboard through to rapid prototyping and cnc machining.
Be as transparent as possible. Involve all stakeholders at all key points to communicate findings and opportunities. Our role as designers is to observe, listen, and take all this input to interpret it into a great result.
We prefer a development partnership as opposed to client-consultant relationship, we aim to foster collaboration at every opportunity. Our legacy to our clients is not only successful products, but a culture of greater creativity and innovation.
